Get Your Lawn Christmas-Ready: Order Turf Before the Rush

Lay it now and you’ll be hosting on a green, established lawn instead of a patch of dirt.

Christmas has a way of sneaking up on us. One minute it’s spring, the next you’ve got the whole family coming over and a backyard that’s still a building site. If you’re planning a new lawn, the time to act is now.

Why timing matters

A new lawn needs a few weeks to root into the soil before it can handle foot traffic, cricket and a crowd. Turf laid in late October or early November has time to settle in and fill out before the big day. Leave it until December and you’ll be racing the calendar, and so is everyone else.

Peak periods are busy for turf farms and installers, and availability can tighten as Christmas approaches. Ordering early gives you more choice of delivery dates and less stress.

A simple countdown

Now to early November: choose your turf and book. Think about how much sun your yard gets and how you use the space. Not sure? Call our Lawn Experts, who will ask a few quick questions and give you a professional recommendation.

Early to mid-November: prepare the site. Clear weeds and debris, level the area and add a quality soil conditioner or sandy loam where needed. Good preparation is the difference between a lawn that thrives and one that struggles.

Delivery and laying day. Fresh turf is a living product, so lay it the day it arrives. Stagger the joins like brickwork, keep edges tight, and give it a thorough soak straight away.

The following weeks: water and wait. Keep the turf consistently moist while the roots take hold. Hold off on mowing until you feel resistance when you gently tug a corner.

Christmas: enjoy it. By then you’ll have a lawn that looks the part.

Which turf gives you the best result?

  • Sir Walter Buffalo Grass® has a soft, broad, deep-green leaf that looks beautiful all year round, and it only needs 2 to 3 hours of full sun a day. A great pick for family yards with a mix of sun and shade.

  • Empire Zoysia™, our “Dream Lawn”, is a premium, finer-bladed grass with around 50% shade tolerance. It grows slowly, so there’s less mowing, and it makes a stunning backdrop for entertaining.
