Choosing the Right Turf for Your South East Queensland Lawn
Spring is a great time to lay a new lawn. Here’s how to pick a grass that will thrive in our climate, and which of our varieties suits your yard.
South East Queensland gives lawns a lot to deal with: hot, humid summers, sudden storms, the odd dry spell, and soils that range from sandy coastal loam to heavy clay. The right turf handles all of it. The key is matching the grass to your yard, not just picking whatever looks greenest on the day.
At Australian Lawn Concepts & Glenview Turf, we’ve spent over 20 years perfecting turf for Australian soils and growing conditions. We grow seven varieties, our “Super 7”, each chosen for a different kind of yard. Here’s how to find yours.
Shady yard or family backyard: Buffalo
Sir Walter Buffalo Grass® has a broad, deep-green leaf that’s soft to the touch and stays beautiful all year round. It needs only 2 to 3 hours of full sun a day, which makes it a standout for yards with trees, fences and patchy light. It’s a great all-rounder for kids, pets and bare feet.
Sapphire® Soft Leaf Buffalo is the only finer-textured buffalo in the world, with shade tolerance of up to 70%. Its deep-green colour has a subtle tinge of blue, so it’s a good pick if you want a buffalo with a more refined look, or if your yard is really shady.
The “dream lawn”: Zoysia
If you want a premium, manicured finish, zoysia is hard to beat. It grows slowly, which means less mowing.
Empire Zoysia™ is our “Dream Lawn”: finer-bladed, premium quality and around 50% shade tolerant, so it suits yards that aren’t in full sun all day.
Augusta® Zoysia is a revolutionary golf course turf grass, now available for home lawns. If you want the best lawn in your street, this is the one.
Nara™ Native Zoysia is Australia’s native lawn: highly drought tolerant, evergreen through winter and summer, slow growing and low maintenance. A smart choice if you want something tough and water-wise.
Full sun and high traffic: Couch
IronCutter™ Elite Hybrid Bermudagrass is elegant and durable, with minimal thatching and easy maintenance. It’s built for high-traffic areas where kids, pets and backyard cricket take their toll.
Wintergreen Couch is the classic couch option for full-sun areas, with a nice green colour and fine leaf blades.

Why spring is a great time to lay turf
Warm-season grasses love the lift in soil temperature that comes with spring. Laid now, your new lawn has months of strong growing weather to establish deep roots before the heat of midsummer arrives.
Tips for laying your new lawn
Prepare the soil. Clear weeds and debris, level the area, and add a quality soil conditioner or sandy loam where needed.
Order the right amount. Measure carefully and add a little extra for cuts and edges.
Lay on delivery day. Fresh turf is a living product, so lay it as soon as possible.
Stagger the joins like brickwork and keep edges tight to avoid gaps.
Water straight away. Give it a thorough soak, then keep it consistently moist for the first few weeks while roots take hold.
Hold off on mowing until the turf has rooted and you feel resistance when you gently tug a corner.
